It primarily involved Spanish colonial forces and the Berber tribes inhabiting the mountainous Rif region in northern Morocco. The war marked the culmination of centuries of confrontations between the Rif people and the Spanish. Here’s some background and context:
French Protectorate in Morocco: In March 1912, the French established a protectorate in Morocco due to the collapse of Moroccan governance after years of European interference. As part of this arrangement, the French granted Spain a protectorate sublease of approximately 7,700 square miles along Morocco’s Mediterranean coast. This territory was adjacent to Spain’s existing enclaves of Melilla and Ceuta. However, much of the protectorate consisted of rugged, mountainous terrain inhabited by various Berber groups collectively known as the Rif. These groups maintained local autonomy and strongly resisted Spanish Christian rule.
Spanish Administration and Pacification: The Spanish army was tasked with administering and pacifying the protectorate. However, the conscript force faced challenges in terms of resources, leadership, training, and morale. Despite six years of military efforts, about three-fourths of the protectorate remained unpacified. Frustrated by the situation, in 1919, the Spanish government authorized General Dámaso Berenguer, the high commissioner of the protectorate, to intensify efforts to bring more of the region under Spanish control. Muhammad Abd el-Krim: The Rif War was led by Muhammad Abd el-Krim, a prominent figure among the Berber tribes. His leadership and resistance efforts posed a significant challenge to the Spanish colonial forces. The Rif War was a pivotal conflict, reflecting the clash between colonial powers and indigenous peoples. It remains historically significant for its impact on the region and the struggle for autonomy and independence."
